At least two persons were killed, including one in police firing, and eight others injured as members of two communities indulged in heavy clashes in sensitive Veraval town, about 100 km from Junagadh on Monday over an incident of eve-teasing, prompting authorities to clamp curfew in the area.

A youth Hassan Zakir Hussain was killed in Taj Society when police allegedly opened fire to disperse rampaging mobs that resorted to heavy stone pelting and setting ablaze nearly 40 shops and as many vehicles, police said.

Another person was stabbed to death in Jalaramnagar area and was brought dead to Civil Hospital, sources said, adding he has not been identified.

The authorities have imposed curfew in the area, police said adding that it would be in force till 8 am on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said that rioting was still on in some of the localities while police intensified operations to bring the situation under control.

Preliminary reports suggested that the sudden eruption of communal violence followed the news of a girl from Kharva community being reportedly teased by a minority community youth in Baharkot area.

Additional troops have been deployed in the tense areas like Gandhichowk, Charchowk and Bhalka areas.
